All-in rate vs. linehaul + fuel surcharge
Freight is quoted two ways: linehaul + fuel surcharge, where fuel floats with the DOE price, or a single all-in rate with fuel baked in.
Why break the fuel out
Carriers want to know how much of an all-in rate is really covering fuel. Brokers and shippers compare all-in quotes against linehaul + fuel contracts. Invoices sometimes apply the percent to the all-in instead of the linehaul by mistake.
Per-mile surcharge
Linehaul = all-in − (miles × surcharge per mile)
Example: $1,980 all-in, 500 miles, $0.96/mi surcharge → fuel $480, linehaul $1,500.
Percent surcharge
Linehaul = all-in ÷ (1 + surcharge %)
Example: $1,220 all-in at 22% → linehaul $1,000, fuel $220. (Not $1,220 × 22%: that charges fuel on fuel.)
Fuel Calc does this in both directions with your own matrix, per load or for a whole spreadsheet of lanes.
